Why Would I Need Backflow Inspection and Service?

People usually don’t think about their backflow preventer until something goes wrong—but inspections and service are essential for both safety and compliance.

The main reason is to protect your drinking water.
A backflow preventer stops contaminated water (from irrigation systems, chemicals, or stagnant lines) from flowing backward into your clean water supply. Without proper testing, a failure could allow pollutants to enter your home or a public water system.

It’s also required by law in many cases.
In Utah, most backflow assemblies—especially on sprinkler systems and commercial properties—must be tested annually by a certified tester. Skipping inspections can lead to fines, water shutoffs, or failed compliance reports.

Systems wear out over time.
Backflow devices have internal parts like valves and seals that can:

  • Wear down

  • Get clogged with debris

  • Freeze or crack in colder months

  • Fail silently without obvious signs

Regular inspections catch these issues early before they turn into bigger (and more expensive) problems.

You may need service if you notice warning signs:

  • Water leaking from the device

  • Reduced water pressure

  • Discolored or bad-tasting water

  • Sprinkler system issues

  • A failed inspection report

It’s often tied to property transactions or upgrades.
If you’re buying, selling, or modifying a property, a current backflow test may be required to prove the system is functioning properly.

In short, backflow inspection and service isn’t just maintenance—it’s about protecting health, staying compliant, and avoiding costly repairs or liability.

Do I NEED Backflow Preventer Service?

In Utah, backflow preventer inspections are typically required annually to ensure cross-connection control systems are functioning properly and protecting the public water supply. For businesses, this isn’t just routine maintenance—it’s a regulatory obligation that carries real consequences if ignored.

A failed or untested backflow assembly can allow contaminants like chemicals, fertilizers, or stagnant water to flow back into clean drinking lines, creating serious health risks and potential liability. Municipalities can issue fines, require immediate repairs, or even suspend water service for non-compliance. Taking annual backflow testing seriously helps companies stay in good standing, avoid costly disruptions, and demonstrate a commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
